01Site repair

When your website breaks, every hour counts.

WordPress repair, emergency support and malware removal, for the moment something goes wrong. When your site is down, showing an error or has been hacked, every hour can cost you customers. We treat a website that is down as urgent, find what has gone wrong, get your business back online as quickly as possible. In an emergency we will work outside business hours to get your website back up.

A hacked website is far more than an annoyance. Visitors can be sent to scam sites, your customers' details can be put at risk, Google and browsers can warn people away, and your search rankings can fall, sometimes before you even know it has happened. The longer it is left, the more damage it does to your business and your reputation.

It is not always malware. Often the cause is far more ordinary: a plugin that clashed with an update, a setting that no longer matches, or a server that has run into trouble. The first job is always finding the real cause, because the fix depends on it.

Getting you back online quickly is the whole job. Our service level agreement sets out how quickly we respond to critical issues.

Signs your website needs help.
02What goes wrong

What the messages mean.

The message on screen rarely tells you the cause. Here is what the common ones mean, and what we do about each.

01

Error 500

The server hit a problem while running your site and gave up, a bit like a till that jams halfway through a sale. It is a general message, so it does not say why. We find the cause, often a plugin or theme that clashed with an update, and put it right.

02

White screen or "critical error"

WordPress has crashed while building the page, so you see a blank screen or a message instead of your site. A faulty plugin or theme, or an update that did not finish, is often behind it. We track down which and fix it.

03

Database connection error

Your pages and settings are stored in a database, a bit like a filing cabinet behind the site. This message means the site cannot reach it. We find out why, and get it reconnected.

04

Hacked or infected

Someone has added their own code to your site, to send visitors elsewhere, show spam or steal details. It often gets in through an out of date plugin or a weak password. We remove it and secure your site.

05

Visitors sent to strange sites

People click your link and land on a spam or scam website instead. That is a sign something harmful is hiding on your site, and it needs cleaning out straight away.

06

A warning from Google or your browser

Google or a browser tells people that your site may be hacked or unsafe, which scares customers away. We clean the site up, so the warning can be cleared.

It means the server hit a problem while running your website and gave up, a bit like a till that jams halfway through a sale. It is a general message that does not say what went wrong. Common causes are a plugin or theme that has clashed with an update, a setting that has gone wrong, or a server problem. We find which it is and fix it.

WordPress has crashed while building the page, so you see a blank screen or the message "There has been a critical error on this website" instead of your site. It is often caused by a faulty plugin or theme, or an update that did not finish properly. We track down which and put it right.

Your pages and settings are stored in a database, a bit like a filing cabinet behind your site. This message means the site cannot reach it. The cause can be wrong login details, a database that has become damaged, or a server problem, and we find which.

Signs include visitors being sent to strange websites, spam pages you did not create, warnings from Google or your browser, new admin users you do not recognise, or the site suddenly running slowly. Not every problem is a hack, so we check before assuming.

Very, and it gets worse the longer it is left. Visitors can be sent to scam or spam sites, customers' details can be put at risk, and Google and browsers can show warnings that scare people away. Spam pages can also appear under your name, and your search rankings can fall. Customers who lose trust in your site are hard to win back, which is why we treat a hacked site as urgent.

Usually through something out of date or weak: an old plugin or theme with a known flaw, or an easy to guess password. Attackers use software that scans the internet for sites with these weaknesses.

We treat a website that is down as urgent, and work to get you back online as quickly as possible. How long it takes depends on the cause, which is why we start by finding it, and we keep you updated as we go.

In an emergency, yes. We will get your website back up outside business hours, rather than leaving you offline until the next working day.

Critical issues, such as a website that is down, are our highest priority. Our service level agreement says we aim to start within 1 hour of a report during working hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm.

Keep WordPress, your theme and your plugins up to date, take regular backups and have someone watching for problems. Our care plans cover WordPress and plugin updates, security monitoring, backups and hosting.
